I am at work and my baby is at home alone and there is a huge storm with loud thunder about every 5 minutes. Somebody tell me shes not scared and crying, cause there is no way I can get home to her....  :comfort:

Does she have a kennel or something that she can burrow into?  She might be scared but will be okay if she has a way to hide.  Sorry, thunder tends to freak dogs out.  Does the same thing to horses.

I have just recently started leaving her out during the day, her kennel is put up. But I leave a pile of blankets on the couch for her.. Its started to calm down now. Im going to walmart ASAP after work to get a doggie bed or something.  I cant believe this freaked me out so much. I am a first time mamma, so Im still so worried about her.

We get afternoon thunderstorms on a regular basis here in Tampa.  I worry every time one rolls in about my three at home.  Buelah and Toby seem to not mind them much but Oscy hates them.  Poor little guy will hide under the bed until they are over.  During the day they have access to the kitchen and the back yard.  I make sure that he has plenty of blankies to hide under.
I completely understand how you feel about it though.  It's so hard to be away knowing that they are scared like that.  Just give her lots of hugs and belly rubs when you get home and she will most likely forget all about it....

Thanks so much guys! Its all over now. Just the thought of my baby crying and wanting me, oh, its hurt wrenching.

Make sure the bed you get for her is a "cave" type, like those cat igloos, something where she can feel protected on all sides but can still see out and get out if she needs to.

Sorry I was too late to help.  Patty had a good idea though about the cat igloo thing.  Porky gets terrified from storms too, so I know how you feel not being there for your baby.  I'm sure she did just fine even though she might have gotten scared.  Chances are you did what I do...Worry and then get home and see them sitting there smiling at you like nothing every happened. LOL

Is hiring a pet sitter an option if you are really that worried?   That's what I do with Porky when I am gone for a long time.  Ever since his poisioning I have been paranoid about him getting into stuff. I do understand that its not possible for some people though.  Just remeber the more blankies, the more hiding spots for when they're scared.   I leave Porky's kennel out when I'm gone (with the door off) So that if he feels he needs alone time or gets scared he can go in and hide.  He seems to do really well with that.  Porky is my first too, so I can totally emphatize with you about the worry.

Try conditioning her to accept the sound of thunder.  I love rain storms, so I play a 60 minute cd of a thunderstorm every night when I go to bed.  Clifford has only been scared of 1 storm (a doooozy) in 11.5 yrs.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.
