Can anyone help me???  Porky got into the closet in our guest room and found a moth bar called Cedar-ize.  I'm not sure if there was anything left in the package or not because that got left behind by the last renter.  What should I do???   The active ingredient is paradichlorober and perfume.  will it hurt him at all???  Please Please help! I have tried getting ahold of the vet and no one is answering!  I do not know who else to call.

Call another vet asap, there has to be one open somewhere. Do you have an ER anywhere in the area? If not call poison control they can at least tell you how toxic it is, I've done that in the past when Hallie ate part of a Lily. She once "may" have gotten one of my Dad's heart pills off the floor. We weren't sure but I ran her to the vet and they made her vomit just to be safe. Keep calling until you find someone you will feel better once you know for sure how toxic it is or isn't....let us know!

Porky ate most of the label so I cant tell the ingredients.   I got ahold of the vet.  They said he should be fine but feed him peroxide to make him vomit and watch him.

This number was on a site about the Cedar-ize...

If you have a poisoning emergency in the United States call 1-800-222-1222

I just called the number and they asked some questions I didn't know the answer to like his age and how long ago it happened and if he is acting any different...but he said if he got more than a teaspoon it has the potential of causing some major problems. If it has been less than 2 hours, he suggests to give 2 tsp of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (be sure it's a new bottle as it goes stale fast...if you pour some into the cup of your hand and it bubbles you should be ok) mixed with 2 tsp broth (any kind) followed with a bit of canned food or more broth. Then run him around the yard, the activitiy should get him to vomit. If no vomiting, then in 30 min repeat. If no vomiting after 1 hour, go to vet. Symptoms if Porky got less than a tsp of cedar-ize would be nausea and vomiting. If more, then could effect liver, kidney, etc. If it has been more than 2 hours since he ate the bar, then it's too late to get rid of anything by vomiting so need to go to the vet.

Now this is what he told me but if it were me I'd rush right into a vet to make darn sure it is done right. Let us know.

You posted right as I was...OK good, it sounds like if you can get him to vomit he'll be ok. Do you think there is a chance he got more than 1 tsp of the bar? If so be sure he vomits good...how long ago has it been now that this happened?

He vomitted everything his little tummy had in it.  He vommitted at 20 minutes afterwards.  I am not sure how much was in the packet.  I talked to poison control and got all the ingredients. then they referred me to Kansas State Toxicity center for animals.  I called them, they said they have no idea because it isnt in their books, but they reccommended taking him to the vet.  We are going in right now at 11:50 our time.  I'll let you know what happens.

Leslie posted this on the other board a long time ago - 1-800-548-2423.

I have only used once - when Brandy rolled in some weed killer right after I sprayed it (she was supposed to be trapped in the house). They were very helpful, although there would have been a charge, but the maker of the type of week killer was paying for the calls that week.  I am not sure what the fee would have been - but I was frantic to get immediate information and would have paid anything.

They were very thorough and even called back to check.

Sending rays to Porky - if in doubt - get him up to your vet.  Let us know how he is doing.

I'm sure this is a little late, but I've called a national animal poison control office before.  I think the number is (888) 426-4435.  I believe they are 24 hour and really helped me out when I thought Berman had eaten some Draino that I put in the shower.

Anyway, it's a good number to have on hand.  I have it on my refridgerator.

We Porky to the vet.  On the way there he stopped breathing and I had to give him artificial breathing.  I got him breathing again before very long and he was acting very sleepy afterwards.

When we got to the vet I told her that he had stopped breathing and she immediately had his blood levels tested to see how much of the moth bar had been absorbed into his system.  Luckilly, the tests showed no absorbtion at all.  So..the next step was to give him activated charcoal.  They sais he took it really well and didnt try to bite or anything.  After the charcoal was given to him, the vet checked him over completely trying to figure out what had made him quit breathing.  She found nothing at all wrong with him, so she said her best guess would be he panicked and forgot to breathe because he could sense that I was upset about something.

Porky is now at home sleeping quietly and doing fine.  He is supposed to take Pepto Bismol every few hours if he gets an upset stomach from the charcoal.   He sure gave us quite a scare.  Porky is not completely out of the woods yet though.  I have to watch him constantly until tomorrow morning.  So I guess coffee and I will be best friends tonight!

Thank you to all who helped me!!!  A very helpful number to call for animal poisonings like this is Kansas State animal toxicology.  They were the only ones who could really tell me what I should do.  Everyone else seemed to be confused and not really know for sure.  Their number for future reference is 1-785-532-5650.   Poison control for humans was the second most helpful.  I tried the ASPCA's poison control hotline and they wanted a credit card payment of $55.00 before they could tell me anything.  I have no credit card so they were no help at all.    Sorry for the long post, just thought Id share the good numbers with everyone so if this happens to anyone else they know who to call.

Oh my gosh - you must have been scared to death.  So glad he is sleeping good now - sending rays that he does fine - keep us posted.

Porky must be feeling better.  He is back to chewing on everything!!! I'm assuming if he feels good enough to be naughty he will be fine.

That is such great news. We just got home and I came in here to check right away. It sounds like he is going to be just fine. That must have scared you to death! I can't imagine him forgetting to breath becasue you were upset???? Thank goodness it all turned out fine though.

I thought the forgot to breathe explaination was strange too!  I still wonder what really caused it.  Porky has still been tired but is still doing fine.  I'm going to continue to keep an eye on him tonight.

Btw-I am so glad Hallie's vet appointment went well today!

I just read an article about the chemical Porky ingested yesterday and it says the chemical can cause adverse effects for 3 days!!!  I also discovered that Porky problaby quit breathing because he inhaled some of this chemical.  Here is the link....maybe this will convince people not to buy mothballs.  This article kinda freaked me out.

That is scary stuff. I got to the part about a group of animals being repeatedly exposed to the chemical and the horrible things it did to them, and had to stop. Animal testing makes me CRAZY.  :cussing:

It does sound like Porky will be fine now but good you are keeping a close watch. Why do these little ones of ours get into so much trouble!!!

I know what you mean!  I was outraged when I read the part about testing that product on animals!   :cussing:  How could anyone willingly do that to an innocent animal?!

Brekkesmom

Yikes!  Just now read this - rays headed Porky's way.   :xfinger:

I do not even want to read the animal testing article - I cannot handle those.

Thank goodness he is OK. \
Another way to induce vomitting is a bolus of salt, about a dessertspoon of salt with enough water to hold it together, and bung it down the throat.
He may have stop breathing due to the vomiting and stress.
Big hugs to you both.
