We all know that doxies are not supposed to jump because of their backs, but how many of you have a doxie that is going to jump no matter what?  We trained Sgt from the day he came home not to jump and he will wait at the end of the bed for us to put him down.  But Libby has been a jumper from day one.  She did not run, she hopped when she was a baby and she hops more than runs now.  She jumps on and off of everything she can, no matter how hard we try to stop her.  She even tries to jump up into our arms if we are ignoring her.  She is a jumper.  Am I the only one fighting the "don't jump" battle?

Hand raised here !!!!  My Rudy does 95% good not jumping and using the multi ramps we have all over the house.  Brandy is a different story - she is 10 1/2 yrs old and hops around like a baby bunny !!!!  When I am sitting in the recliner and she sees me - she will tear a*s up the ramp and hop hop hop into my lap !  She does the same thing going up the ramp to the big bed......hop hop hop - jump onto dads pillow !!!!   It is a struggle every day to get her to go down the ramps....she will jump down right next to it.....

I feel your pain !   But I am not going to stop trying to get her to stop.......  just keep working at it !!!

Silly girls we have......    :2funny:

So I'm not the only one with jumpers?  I worry constantly about Buelah and Toby....they to race up the ramps so they can jump down next to them.  Oscy is pretty good.  He is always the last one up in the morning and the first one to bed at night so I almost always lift him.  I've tried every single thing I can think of.  I'm open to suggestions here as well!

Hallie was a major jumper when I first got her. I'd turn around to see her sitting on top of a table or on the couch. I don't like ramps inside because they can so easily jump off the side of them so I just taught her not to jump on the furniture at all. I'd say she is now 99.9% reliable (she has not jumped on anything for a long time) but who am I to talk, she still had a back episode! I did have a window installed at ground level in the living room so she can see outside without having to get up on anything which has helped. The only ramp I have is down the back steps (there is no way to go off the side) so she can go out into the yard by herself. (although that isn't going to be happening for a long time again either now, on leash only!).  I was sitting outside with her last night with her leash on in her nice big back yard and thinking how sad our breed is so messed up we can't even let them run across the yard for fear of them going paralyzed!!! (I think I'm entering my anger phase lol).

Oliver, is our jumper, so was Angel Angus. Oliver I have often said has ADD or Mexican jumping bean. Amy is good as long as you give her the comand, STAY or WAIT. As for angel Emma , she was to lazy "why jump when you can get picked up".
On this topic Colleen the breeder of our last three said, you either have a jumper or you don't, they know their selves wha they are capable off.
On another tack who has puller, Oliver favourite trick is pulling anything hanging over the end of the counter or table, his worst fright was when the wine cask fell.

I trained Max not to jump and he never has since he was a wee fellow.  Now Lily is a totally different case.  I tried to train her not to jump.  If she jumped on the couch, I would say "no" and set her on the floor, then pick her up and put her on the couch. She would just stare at me like, "crazy woman, what is wrong with you, I was just there!"  As a result, she jumped until she jumped off the couch and ruptured a disc in January.  Now, not so much.  Gabbe will jump, but not all that often and Minna......well, Minna must either be part Jack Russell or a Tigger with springs in her legs, cause she jumps like crazy.  She can jump so high that her head is even with the kitchen counter.  She also ran up the fence and flipped off of it a la Donald O'Conner in "Singin' in the Rain".  She uses the ramp for a spring board.  I feel back surgery is in her future.  What is a doxie mom to do!

Jumper?  Yes indeed.  Although Franky's papers list him as a "purebread" we are wholly convinced that he is 1/2 flying squirrel.
In his younger and our less "dachsie aware" days he would sun himself on the back of our couch by the bay window, then suddenly leap from the back like he was superman.  He even has the cape for Halloween!  This was before all of the trouble we had with IVDD.
Now there's absolutely NO JUMPING allowed.  Dee is not a jumper, so that's not an issue but neither of our kids are allowed on furniture anymore unless we pick them up and stay with them and no sleeping in the big bed because they cannot be trusted not to jump.  Frank has learned to wait patiently to be picked up, even to go outside. Who would think you could teach an old dog new tricks?

Modem and Molly jump but I am trying to get them to stop because they both have had mild cases of pain in their backs in the past.

Yep.  Gwennie is fearless.  She would jump off anything no matter how high.  I've not had any success in curbing it.  The boys do pretty well with asking to be let up or down, but she is a different story.

Porky here-  Is it possible to get anywhere without jumping?!  That's all I do.  Momma says its real bad for me, but I just can't help it!!  Jumping is so much more fun then walking.  Guess my momma's gonna have to keep on trying to get me to stop. he he.

Ozzy is a jumper as well.  He will be dozing on the couch, but if he hears (or thinks he hears) someone at the door, its zero to 100 mph in a second!  Fortunately, we have a low-sitting couch and his favorite blue round chair is so low he can almost step out of it.

I worry when he gets on our bed - that is pretty high.  So, I try to pick him up and set him down on the floor when I think he is going to jump off.  I also carry him down our stairs so he won't take a flying leap from the third step up.

I've tried training, but that did not work, so I try to minimize the problem as much as I can.
