Lost my dad very early Saturday morning.

He slipped away quietly Saturday moring around 1:45am.  He battled his cancer for 3 years and put up a good fight.  It is good that I went down there on Thursday as he was still coherent and knew me and knew I was there.  He went downhill from there and the hospice people were there round the clock.  They were really wonderful.  I am now back in Houston and we plan to have a memorial service for him up here, since most of the family is here and they lived around here for 40 years.  I think I am still in shock and it hasn't truely hit me yet, because I am too calm about all of this.  He was so special and we had some great times together doing projects on my house.  I know when it hits me, it will really be hard.  Thanks for all of the rays, prayers and support.

So sorry to hear about your dad, Nikki.  My mom died 3 years ago Friday.  It is such a blow.  Stay as busy as you can bear, use every distraction available, and remember the good times.  Wish I could do somethng more concrete to make it better.  It is just very hard.  You are in our thoughts, lots of Colorado rayz.

Oh Nikki I am so sorry. I didn't realize he was that bad. I feel so bad for you. I had the same kind of relationship with my Dad as you, I know how much he meant to you and vice versa. I did the same thing when my Dad died, I was too calm at first. We did a lot of projects around my house too, it does hit you later. The shock helps you get through what you need to get through at first. You have a lot of friends and 4 great wiener dogs that will help you through this. I was so surprised to read this Nikki you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Nikki - I am so sorry - I know how hard it is.  I am so glad you made it to see him ...but I would be willing to bet that your dad was going to wait until you got there.  I truly think we have that power over our bodies - and when you got there - he knew he could let go.    I think you will find the next few weeks busy with taking care of things and then out of the blue it will hit you.  But you will remember the man your dad was and will also be grateful that he is now pain free.  The sense of loss never goes away and you will continually come across things that make you remember him.

My heart is heavy for you - will keep you, your mom and your family in my prayers.

We are sorry to hear that your dad is gone.  We are glad you made it home to be with him.  Unfortunately a lot of us are getting to the age of losing our parents, Aunty and I lost our parents in July & Sept of 1994.  It does get easier over time and you tend to remember the good more than the sad. But even now I will read a book and think gee mom would love this but she isn't here anymore.

I am sorry to read about the loss of your dad.  I'm glad he went peacefully, the hospice people can be so wonderful.  When Dan's mom was dying of cancer, the hospice people took care of everything and everyone.  Sounds like you have some good memories of your dad and I know they will help you cope with the loss.  Thinking of you.
