I just got a voice mail from April and they are on the way to pick Cajsa up.  She is peeing, pooping and moving her back legs.  The clinic said she is doing VERY good !!!!  The said they would be home about 5-6 Eastern time and I am sure she will give us an update then.  Excellent news that she is coming home and all I can say is WHAT A CLINIC that is open on Sunday !!!  Woo Hoo !!!!  Smoochies to Cajsa !

That's truly remarkable!  Cajsa is really making GREAT progress and it sounds like the clinic she was at is doin' great things for Dachsie's long backs.

April

WOOHOO!  We are home and Cajsa has taken some pain meds, but seems to be OK.  She's resting in her crate and Gretchen keeps going over to nose her!  David went to the store to get a baby ex pen that we can put her in with a bed and potty pad during the day.  We talked to the vet about it and she was supportive of that as long as Gretchen wasn't in there with her.  Since we've been home she's not moved or made a peep.  I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.  Any advice for "after they're home" would be welcome.

April,
I am so glad to hear Cajsa is recovering well and is back home  :thumb:
My advice would be keep her still and quiet ... keep her in the crate with only short trips out to potty and then right back in. I assume the vet gave you instructions on how to "sling walk" her with a towel. I would make sure to continue to give her the G & C and the Vit. C.  You should post on Dodgerslist and introduce yourself the folks over there are a wealth of knowledge and will be happy to answer all your questions about aftercare.

More prayers coming your way!!

Actually she didn't tell me how to "sling walk" her.  She is able to stand although very wobbly and only if I stand her up, so I guess it's more accurate to say she can hold her weight.  She did use her front legs to go a few steps before I realized she wanted water.  I brought it to her instead.  I just don't know how to read her signs for food/water/potty.  I am glad she's home but feel like I don't have any idea how to help her now.  She can wag her tail still so I am hanging on to that right now even though I want to cry!

April,

What a helpless feeling but take heart  so many on this board and dodgerslist have been in the same position.  I would attach a water bowl to her crate you know one of the small plastic coupe cups. I think you should feed her as usual although maybe reduce the amount just a bit since she is not going to be as active for awhile. As far as potty trips go i would take her every few hours. You might want to get some of those wee wee pads as well since she may leak or have some accidents in while she recovers it is good to keep them on something absorbent just in case.

Wish i could be of more help ... i know Maryanne is a wealth of knowledge on post surgery recovery you might check out her website as well

April, I just feel so sad for Cajsa!  I am very glad to hear she is making progress...it was about 6 weeks before Sol could stand on his own.  Please e-mail me if I can help at all.  Smootches to your baby girl (and Morgan, LOL).  Is Gretchen living with you now?  What did I miss?

Hang in there mom !!!!  More of our posters will respond tomorrow with advice - those who have been through this.  I urge you too to go to Dodgerslist - ask as many questions as you need to here and there.......

Sorry, I can't offer advice - just moral support !!!

Barb - yes the clinic is amazing.  They are open 24/7, 365 days a year.  They only do emergency and specialty (surgery, cardiology, oncology...etc) work though. They don't do routine vet care.

April - So glad Cajsa is already moving the legs and able to bear her weight.  Those are great signs!  I would call the center today and ask if you were supposed to sling walk her or not.   They did show me how to sling walk Roscoe - and gave me the sling they used to sling walk him there, but Roscoe was not able to move his back legs or bear his weight when we took him home.  We were told to keep Roscoe crated unless closely supervised, and not to even hold him on the couch, but to sit on the floor with him.  We only sling-walked him for a few minutes at each potty break.

We'll keep sending healing rays!

I'm so happy that your sweet pup is home and recovering. I can't offer advice specific to dachsies but my brother's dog (boston terrier) had back surgery a few months ago and he was pretty drugged up and not too interested in much activity. He slept most of the day for a few weeks.

He came to my house for a couple of days when my brother had to be out of town and I just tried to time things like potty breaks every couple of hours, if Moses was awake and, of course, carried him outside to avoid even the few steps out of the house. He seems to be back to his normal self now but will always need to avoid any big jumps over logs, etc.

Cheers and good luck to both of you!

April

Thank you all.  I tried posting to dodgers list, but it had to be reviewed first so I don't know if it's up yet or not.  I hope something jumps out at me there as well.  I am feeling a little better today, but still quite helpless - although a good cry can really do wonders sometimes.  lol  I"m going to ask today if I can bring her in her crate to stay under my desk here at work.  I work in a library although in the back out of sight of the public.  I don't think there'd be a problem as long as she stayed quiet since she is a small dog.  But then again someone might have an issue with it since "dogs are dirty and this is a library" so I don't know.  I figure I can ask and the worst thing they can tell me is no.

That would be excellent if you are able to bring her.  I know it would give you great peace of mind.  How was she this morning?

Boy, I sure miss a lot by not having internet service at the new place yet.  Mega rays and prayers going out to Cajsa for a speedy recovery.

Kari

I really hope that they let you bring her with you - I'm sure that would ease your mind! How is she doing this morning?

I am hoping for continued improvement.  I am scared about what I will find when I get home though.  I asked and am not allowed to bring her with me this week.  That isn't the best, but I guess I have to do it that way.  I did start a new thread with an update from this morning.
