Petunia or Tuna (our kitten) as we affectionately called her got killed last night.  She moved to our farm two days ago and got attack by a ruthless coyote last night.  Our puppy Porky found her this morning when we went out to check on them.

I am blaming myself for her death because they had to move because I am allergic to cats.  If they would have been able to stay here, she would have never died.  Porky is really sad about his best friend dying, he has been howling and crying since he found her.  This has been a really hard week for us, and this happening made it even worse.

I'm sorry for your loss.  One thing to keep in mind is that it's hard telling what would have happened if you hadn't had to change where she lived.

I teach at a prison, where "woulda, coulda, shoulda" is the phrase of the day.  Here's the story I sometimes tell, and it's a true one.

Years ago, at about 11:30 at night, I almost went down to the local 7-11 where I lived to buy some ice cream.  I didn't have a "funny feeling" about it, I just decided not to go.  The next morning the front page story was about a robber who shot the clerk executioner-style in the back room and took off with the cash.  I probably would have bought it, too, had I simply made a different choice.

It probably doesn't help a lot, in the large scheme of things.  At least you've got Porky and he has you!  Just be sure your yard is weiner-dog proof.  Heidi can crawl sideways through our hogwire fence; fortunately, there haven't been a lot of coyotes out back for a long time.

Best Wishes,
Kalman (aka Dackelrich)

Thank you so much for you comforting words!!  Yes, we are very glad to still have Porky.  We also still have our male cat Peter (Petunia's brother).  We brought him back home yesterday afternoon so he wouldn't be alone out there.

We have a weiner dog-proof yard.  Luckilly, our house is in town, so we don't see many coyotes, however, we did see two this year during a blizzard.  We have a fully fenced in yard and keep a close eye on Porky when he is outside.  He is rarely, if ever, outside alone.

I am so grateful for everyone's kind words and prayers during this hard time for our family.  Petunia was so special to me because my husband gave her to me as a birthday gift when he found the two kittens orphaned at his uncle's farm.  We bottle-fed them and kept them as indoor/outdoor cats in our house until I found out I was allergic.   We are all healing quickly from our loss and appreciate your kindness so much!!
